AI Cuts Aircraft Engine-Change Manual Searches From 16 Hours to 20 Minutes

Finding the right maintenance instruction can take a significant share of an aircraft technician’s time.
US company webAI says its on-device artificial intelligence system reduced documentation-search time during one aircraft engine change from 16 hours to 20 minutes.
The reported saving concerns the search for approved technical instructions, not the total time needed to physically replace an engine. The result came from an unnamed European regional maintenance operation and has not been independently verified.
The system was used with an approved manual set of about 34,000 pages for a regional jet fleet. Technicians can ask questions in plain language, while the software returns an answer together with the source page from the original documentation. According to webAI, results were retrieved in less than two seconds.
In maintenance work, locating and checking approved documentation is part of safe working practice. Technical manuals can be extensive, however, and the relevant procedure may be difficult to find, particularly for infrequent or non-routine tasks. Time spent searching for instructions can interrupt the work itself.
webAI’s Frontline system runs locally on an iPad without an internet connection. The approach is intended for environments where connectivity is unreliable, cloud services cannot be used or sensitive technical documentation cannot be transferred to external infrastructure.
The company says the same model could be used in industrial maintenance and medical-device servicing. Its practical value will nevertheless depend on the completeness, accuracy and currency of an organisation’s own technical documentation.
The technology does not replace approved work instructions. Its purpose is to make them easier to find. For maintenance organisations, the key feature is that the system provides the original source page with each answer, allowing the technician to verify the instruction before starting work.
